Coronavirus Update - Feb 07, 2020

Fri, Feb 7, 2020

Dear Parent Community,

Seoul Foreign School continues to monitor the Coronavirus situation, and our crisis management team is meeting twice daily to discuss plans. We will continue to monitor this closely over the upcoming weekend. Please be assured we will listen to directives given from Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) and the authorities in Seodaemun-gu and respond accordingly.

  • We are aware of confirmed case #23 being in the Seodaemun-gu area.  We are anticipating more details about where this patient traveled while in Korea.
  • We are aware that Chadwick International School closed today based on confirmed case #19  who was at a mall in the nearby area of their school. They have been advised by Songdo ministry to close for the forthcoming week. We have had no such advice or directive from the SMOE.
  • We have installed a thermal camera to screen attendees for any in-school public events, for example, this week’s production of Mermaid
  • We are extending our cancellation of all inter-school events and school sponsored off campus activities until Sunday, February 23.

We have full contingency plans in place to allow students to continue studies as effectively as possible at home, in the event we need to close school. We recognize the anxiety this situation causes but please know we are working diligently internally and receiving advice from numerous official sources to support us in making the best decisions for our community.

Sincerely,

Coronavirus Update - Health Office Recommendations

Fri, Jan 31, 2020

Dear Parent Community,

The school is continuing to make every effort to keep our students healthy and safe in this novel Coronavirus situation.

The common symptoms of novel coronavirus infection include fever and/or respiratory symptoms such as coughing and sore throat. It can be transmitted from person to person through droplets and close contact with an infected patient.
The preventative actions you can take to reduce exposure to and transmission of a range of respiratory infections include the following:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and frequently. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people with respiratory symptoms such as coughing and sneezing. Wear a mask when needed.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or a mask when coughing or sneezing.
  • Disinfect contaminated surfaces such as door handles.

For more information on Coronavirus, situation summary, and guidance for travelers, please check the following resources:

WHO
US CDC
Korea CDC

At the moment, the school is following the Korea CDC guidelines to control any infectious disease. Any student or faculty/staff member with a temperature of 37.5°C (99.5°F) or higher will be sent home. If your child’s temperature is 37.5°C or higher, please let the student stay home until he/she is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Best regards,

SFS Health Office

Coronavirus Update - SFS Action Points

Thurs, Jan 30, 2020

Dear Parent Community,

Seoul Foreign School continues to monitor the Coronavirus situation, and our crisis management team is meeting twice daily to discuss necessary steps. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) is now requiring that SFS report all cases where a student has traveled to China’s Hubei Province.

SFS action steps to keep students safe:

  • Requiring self-reporting for those who have traveled to China (including Macau and Hong Kong) or hosted someone in their home overnight
  • Cleaning crew taking extra precautions to wipe and disinfect surfaces, main entrances, handrails, door handles, etc.
  • Transportation staff are cleaning the seats, arm rests, and other touching areas of the buses with a new disinfectant and have added hand sanitizers for student use
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes are being distributed to classrooms, if a child has a cough please provide a mask
  • Students with any sign of symptoms are sent to the Health Office
  • 14-day quarantine for students and faculty as a precautionary measure, with a requirement to report to the Health Office for clearance upon return
  • Limiting outside visitors to campus and suspending the use of our facility by outside groups

Using information from WHO, KCDC, SMOE, and conversations with other Heads of School, we are in line with or exceeding the recommended precautions. We are joined by KAIAC and APAC schools who took similar action canceling inter-school events.

As of today, we plan to host the drama production, Mermaid, held on campus February 6-8. This will be open to SFS students, staff and parents who currently meet the requirements to attend school. The school is prepared to extend a refund for tickets purchased for outside guests. We will continue to communicate as circumstances change.

Important Update on Coronavirus

Mon, Jan 27, 2020

Dear SFS Community,

This afternoon, following a meeting of our Senior Leadership team, Medical Team, Schoolwide Directors, and a medical representative from Severance Hospital, we are taking the following steps in response to the evolving situation surrounding the Coronavirus in China and the region.

    • Anyone who has traveled to or has hosted someone who has been to China (including Hong Kong and Macau) during or in the lead up to the Lunar New Year break, please adhere to the following:
      • You are required to keep your child(ren) at home beginning tomorrow, January 28 through February 10.  This timing is based on the current known incubation period.
      • You are required to complete the following form so our health office can maintain sufficient records and contact you directly.
    • SFS Faculty and Staff are following the same procedures (14 day quarantine).
    • Following the Korean guideline, any student or faculty/staff member with a temperature of 37.5 will be sent home.

We recognize the significant inconvenience this will cause, however, we have made this decision in the best interest of the health and well-being of our community. We have also been in direct contact with other International schools before determining these actions.  We understand this is an ever evolving situation and our Senior Leaders will be meeting daily to update on the situation and we will continue to monitor and respond accordingly.

Finally, if you have any doubts, please keep your child at home and contact your section for further guidance.
