Visual Arts

These courses stimulate young imaginations, challenge perceptions, and develop creative and analytical skills. Involvement in the arts encourages students to understand the arts in context and the cultural histories of artworks, thus supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view. 

British School

In the British School, the Visual Art curriculum engages, inspires, and challenges students. The curriculum stimulates creativity and promotes imagination while equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own works of art. Lessons and projects provide a variety of experiences and methods for students to understand and respond to the world, as it enables them to communicate their thoughts and make relevance to the bigger concepts. Students explore ideas and meanings through the works of artists from different times and cultures. Through the integration with IEYC, IPC, and IMYC units, students are given the opportunity to explore the big ideas through visual art, while making connections with other subjects. 

Elementary School

In the Elementary School visual art program, students are exposed to a wide range of art materials and techniques. Students have the opportunity to engage in painting, drawing, ceramics, weaving, printmaking, and sculpture. Art classes focus not only on skill development but also on an understanding of the creative process and an appreciation of art history. As part of the Primary Years Program (PYP), learning from the homeroom class is integrated to encourage connections between different subjects.

Middle School

The Art curriculum is designed and taught with the understanding that gaining visual literacy allows our students to be well-rounded, critical, and divergent thinkers that are able to contribute to the world in a beautiful and meaningful way through their creative expression. Students explore the lives and influence of a variety of artists and artwork, create two and three-dimensional works, explore unique and unusual ways of creating, honor the benefits of both traditional and digital art all while finding their voice as an artist and how it can be used to contribute in a positive way to their community and world.

High School

In the High School, MYP and DP courses are designed to encourage a lively, inquiring, and informed attitude towards visual art and design in all its forms, both historic and contemporary. MYP Visual Arts values the process of creating artwork and the point of realization; the two elements combined tell us what students have experienced, learned and attempted to convey. By developing curiosity about themselves, others and the world, students become effective learners, inquirers and creative problem-solvers. Development in the arts is a dynamic process, and not necessarily linear. The student moves freely through a creative process towards a deeper understanding of the arts.
