During the 2020-2021 school year, SFS community service club ACTS (A Call To Society) learned that luxury brand MCM engaged with students to artistically upcycle old or defective products. At that point, ACTS was looking for ways to support their charitable cause, multicultural daycare center 사단법인 밝은미래봉사단. They couldn’t regularly visit the center as originally planned due to the pandemic but they wanted to maintain the relationship and think of new, creative ways to support them. ACTS feels a special affinity towards 사단법인 밝은미래봉사단 - many SFS students are multicultural and may have had difficulty adjusting to life in Korea and community service is at the heart of our School’s mission.
Joohun (Grade 12) collaborated with SFS art teachers for students to upcycle 1,000 MCM bags, sneakers, phone cases, and other accessories. Nearly 500 students spent about 3 months decorating the products with their unique designs. Then ACTS members Joohun, Darren (Grade 12), Dongchae (Grade 12), Jonathan (Grade 12), Ray (Grade 11), and Katie (Grade 11) sold the products to parents, teachers, and other community members. In September 2021, they donated $10,000 USD to the daycare center, who will use the funds to purchase technology supporting online learning activities.
This project was a challenging learning opportunity for the organizers involved. There was no precedent for this type of activity at SFS and logistical delays, pressure to succeed, and the technical skills required to build an online store pushed them out of their comfort zone. But in the end, this project was greatly beneficial for all parties - upcycling defective products helped MCM and the environment, the artistic and business process was a good learning opportunity for SFS students, and the daycare center was very grateful for the donated funds.
