This is the break down of how the day will look like for Middle School students throughout each day. Below are the classes that are offered within each session.
Academics (Class A) Session 1-3: June 13 - July 1, 2022
*The following are three-week long classes and these class materials do not repeat content.
Design & Manufacturing
Design and Manufacturing will help students develop and explore their creative minds by solving everyday problems through design in a SFS Design lab. Students will work on a project by building an item from scratch, deconstructing issues to its core to find a solution. Students will work with machinery and tools in a safe, supervised environment. Skills taught in previous sessions may be enhanced and built on in following sessions by applying to multiple sessions.
Essay Writing
Essay Writing is a course designed to hone writing skills and techniques. During lessons, students will be exploring the different essay styles from argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive. Embedded in exploration of the different essay types, students will enhance specific essay writing skills such as thesis writing, sentence structure, and word choice. The instructor will provide feedback that will reinforce students’ understanding of these skills and how to optimally utilize them within their writing.
Sports (Class B) Session 1: June 13 - 17, 2022
Sports (Class B) Session 2: June 20 - 24, 2022
Sports (Class B) Session 3: July 27 - July 1, 2022

Badminton
The Badminton course will be broken down into technique and game portions. After a brief introduction to the rules, students will engage in theory and drills in order to gain proficiency over the technique focus for the day. Important skills such as positioning, serving, deception, and different types of strokes will be included. Students will be placed into groups based on skill and experience level to maximize their learning, and scrimmages will give students a chance to practice and apply their techniques. New and experienced students are welcome to apply.
Basketball
This Basketball course will focus on perfecting skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and pivoting, as well as be exposed to different plays and strategies that can be utilized during game settings. Professional coaches will help adapt students play their optimal position and individualized analysis and feedback will be shared with students. Students will have the opportunity to apply their skills during scrimmages each class, in teams based on skill level and capabilities. New and experienced students are welcome to apply.
Volleyball
This course is designed to teach students the skills, rules, and strategies involved in volleyball. Students will be split into groups based on ability and will practice skills such as digging, passing, setting, spiking, blocking, and serving. Instructors will teach students about the different positions of libero, setters, and hitters. Scrimmages will allow students the chance to apply the skills and knowledge that they have practiced. New and experienced students are welcome to apply for multiple sessions.

Academic Quiz Team (AQT)
This AQT course has been devised to teach students about the fundamentals of quiz bowl and provide an opportunity over the summer to enhance skills relating to AQT competitions. AQT is a fast-paced, team-based quiz competition that fosters the advancement of knowledge and team building skills. Teams compete to answer questions in subjects ranging from literature and science to pop culture and current events. This course will help students understand what topics to study and provide a space for them to gain competing experience.
Adobe Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop (Sessions 1 & 3 only)
The Adobe Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop course is an introduction to the three basic Adobe softwares. Students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the important tools of Adobe Illustrator to create shapes and lines, adjust and transform different objects, incorporate text and color into their projects, and try out the many effects Illustrator has to offer. With Photoshop, students will work on different projects to learn and employ skills such as cropping, saturation, brightness, and contrast. Major InDesign tools will be taught to learn the tricks to typography, learn how to create their own guidelines and margins, and import photos and graphics. If needed, the three softwares may be downloaded to personal MacBooks at the Camp SFS office, when they are brought in a minimum of 2 hours prior to class.
Career Exploration (Session 2 only)
Career Exploration course is aimed to identify students’ interests and personality traits to discover various career paths. Students will research into well-known and niche majors, navigate career paths, and research industry trends and notable people in the field. Aspects such as workplace professionalism, cover letters and resumes, and email writing will also be covered.
Coding (Sessions 2 & 3 only)
This coding class will introduce students to the basics Python, C/C++, JAVA, and other basic programming languages. Practical tasks will help students gain problem solving skills and allow them to execute what they have learned. Students will work in groups to complete a project that encompasses skills the students have learned. Beginners and experienced students alike are encouraged to apply.

Intermediate Debate
Intermediate Debate has been designed to help students exercise the principles, skills, and etiquette of debate. Students will form arguments on a variety of topics, as they will be drilled in the finer points of speech making and learn how to combine style with intelligibility. In addition, students will learn how to argue both for and against points while considering the other side’s arguments. Throughout the course students will gain confidence in their public speaking and argumentation.
