MYP Drama in the middle school provides students the opportunity to explore the dramatic arts in Grades 6-8. Students discover the work of theatre theorists, engage in production and performance elements, and have performance opportunities each year. Learning and creating through play is the guiding principle that allows all students to engage with theatre in a hands on and exciting way.
Students in Grade 9 have the opportunity to explore, develop skills in, and perform physical theatre; Verbatim theatre; acting through the perspective of theatre theorists; reading, analyzing and performing extracts of plays, and devising original pieces for performance. Students in Grade 10 have the opportunity to explore and develop skills in masks, stage makeup, and world theatre practices, as well as consider the use of theatre in social justice practices. Throughout the course students read, analyze, and perform extracts of plays, engage in practical application of skills, devise original pieces, and participate in a culminating performance.
DP Theatre Standard Level/Higher Level is a two-year theatre course that gives students the opportunity to actively engage in theatre as creators, designers, directors and performers. It focuses on working both individually and collaboratively as part of an ensemble. Through researching, creating, preparing, designing, presenting, and critically reflecting on theatre, students gain a richer understanding of themselves, their community and the world. They learn the importance of making theatre with integrity, and the impact that theatre can have on society. For this coursework, it is recommended that the student have some prior experience with theatre.
