Elementary School

Primary Years Programme

The IB PYP is an transdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that balances the search for understanding, the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, the development of positive attitudes and the opportunity for positive action. At the heart of the PYP is a commitment to using structured, concept-based inquiry to drive learning. Students are encouraged to construct knowledge and generate questions as they build an understanding through carefully planned learning engagements.

We believe that some of the best learning can take place outside the classroom, so we take students outside to make the most of what our environment can offer. Our campus provides engaging learning opportunities outside the classroom, as we have purposeful built playgrounds and a large forested area for play and exploration and we back directly onto Ansan Mountain. Our fleet of school buses allow for out of school field trips.

ASSESSMENT

The purpose of assessment at Seoul Foreign Elementary School is to improve student learning, to provide information on student learning and to contribute to the efficacy of learning programmes. Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering evidence for and of learning. This evidence will be used to give recognition and timely feedback to the learners and all other stakeholders.

  • Assessment will reflect best practice that supports the learner and the teacher in the promotion of student achievement.
  • At Seoul Foreign Elementary School we believe assessment is integral to all teaching and learning. It is central to the PYP goal of thoughtfully and effectively guiding students through the five essential elements of learning:
    • the acquisition of knowledge
    • the understanding of concepts
    • the mastering of skills
    • the development of attitudes
    • the decisions to take action
  • Seoul Foreign Elementary School’s approach to assessment recognises the importance of assessing the process of inquiry as well as the products of inquiry.
  • The main aim of assessment in the PYP at Seoul Foreign Elementary School is to provide feedback on the learning process and the development of the five essential elements to inform further learning.
  • Students and teachers are actively engaged in assessing the student's' progress as part of the development of their wider critical thinking and self assessment skills.

Approaches to Learning

Through the Approaches to Learning (ATL) in the PYP, MYP and DP IB programs, students develop skills that have relevance across the curriculum that help them “learn how to learn”. The ATL skills can be learned and taught, improved with practice and developed incrementally. They provide a solid foundation for learning independently and with others. ATL skills help students prepare for, and demonstrate learning through, meaningful assessment. They provide a common language that students and teachers can use to reflect on, and articulate on, the process of learning.

There are five ATL skill categories that house a set of skills students embrace throughout the year when developmentally appropriate: communication skills, social skills, self-management skills, research skills and thinking skills.
