About the British School Library

Students Reading

Welcome

The British School library program is to ensure that students and staff are effective and efficient users of ideas and information. The library program promotes literacy and the love of reading; provides guidance in the use of information and educational technology for life-long learning. The love of children's literature is nurtured by the presentations of various authors and illustrators throughout the school year.

Our facility has a print and multi-media collection of approximately 15,000 items. The library provides the resources needed by the classroom and teachers to achieve the outcomes of British National curriculum.

About the Library Catalogue

Our library catalog is Follett Destiny. This online subscription allows library patrons to search the catalog via the internet from any location. Students in the upper grades who complete a short orientation activity are given their own user name and password. This allows them to check their circulation status, renew a book, and create personalized book lists. The Destiny Home page also contains links to SFS online databases: World Book Online, NewsBank, and EBSCO, TeachingBooks, TumbleBook Library, and BrainPop. Because these are paid subscriptions, a user name and password are required when accessing these sites from home. We hope our students, teachers, and parents will use these resources on a regular basis. Links are listed below.

Information

Library Hours

The library is open to students from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students may visit the library during regular school hours including recesses provided they have a pass from their teacher.

Loan Policy

Students have set borrowing limits to the number of books they may check out depending on their grade level. Books are circulated for one week and may be renewed by the student on or before the due date. Students are allowed to borrow books up to the borrowing limit as long as they return books on time. It is the library policy that students must return books before they check out other books again from the library. If students have overdue books, the checkout system gets locked. This means that students are not able to borrow books until overdue books are returned. Overdue notices are sent to students through classroom teachers every week.

Library Visits

Students visit the library every week on a regular scheduled time. Each class has a regular weekly time slot for book exchange and story time for Early Years students. Years 3 to 6 are also taught how to use computer system and other basic library skills. Individual students may come during the day with teacher permission. Maximum of four students may be allowed to visit the library for research purposes anytime during the school day with a library pass.

Library Rules

  • Keep books in a library bag when transporting them to or from the library to protect books from getting damaged.
  • Use a bookmark rather than bending the corner of a page or leaving the book open flat on its face.
  • Keep books out of the reach of babies or very young children.
  • Turn pages carefully so they won't tear or wrinkle.
  • Return books on time so that other children can enjoy them.
  • Please do not reshelve books unless shelf markers are placed properly.
  • You must have a library pass to visit the library individually during school hours including the break times.
  • The Library is a QUIET place. Speak softly.
  • No eating or drinking in the library at all times.

Damaged and Lost Book Policy

The student is required to pay for any lost or damaged materials. Parents should notify the librarian if a library book is lost or damaged beyond use. Librarian will issue a bill for the replacement cost after three notices is sent. The replacement charge is calculated as the cost of the book plus 30% post and packaging. If the book is later found at home, then the money is returned less a W3,000 processing fee. This policy applies to everyone who borrows materials from the library.

If a book page accidentally rips, please do not attempt to repair it at home. Please return the book with a note to the library. We use special glue and book tapes for repairing books. Students are required to use a book bag to protect books from getting damaged. A book bag can be purchased from the SFS sprit shop. Please make sure your child's name is clearly marked on the bag. Each child is responsible for books that he/she checks out from the library until they are returned. If a book is lost, parents are responsible to pay for the replacement costs. Please go over with your child concerning the care of library books and the need for prompt return of library books.
