Special Events at Our Library
Summer Reading Program
Summertime is the perfect time for children to continue improving their reading skills. It’s a time when children can really “get into” a book, spending an extended amount of time reading for pleasure. It’s also a time when families can spend a bit more time reading together or talking about books. All students entering Year 1 through Year 6 are welcome to participate in our summer reading club. Completed Reading Logs are to be returned to the Library Media Center in August. All participants will receive recognition and be invited to a special celebration in the library.
Lunch Time Reading Club
The 600-Minute Reading Club is an exciting program that allows children a chance to read for fun during lunch period. The 600-Minute Reading Club is designed to encourage children to discover the joy of reading. Children can read anything they choose, as long as they read for fun. They can read books, magazines, comic books, or anything else. They can read to themselves, read aloud to someone else, or have someone else read aloud to them. It all counts toward 600 minutes.
Book Fair
Each year the library sponsors an Autumn Book Fair during the week of parent/teacher conferences. The local bookstore displays a wide variety of books in the library. Children will view books during their assigned library time and can either purchase directly from the Book Fair or reserve books for parents to make the purchase on the day of the conference. In the past the proceeds from sales has been donated to the school wide fund raising project for our tuberculosis (TB) care center in North Korea. The profits also are used to purchase new materials for the library, sponsor author visits, and foster reading incentive programs.
Red House Book Club
Children have the opportunity to purchase books through the Red House Book Club several times a year. Catalogues will be sent home. This is a great time to help your children begin their own library.
Author/Illustrator visits
In March, 2008, Poetry Alive! – a poetry performance group out of Ashville, North Carolina in the United States made a return visit to Seoul Foreign School. Poetry Alive helped children to self-actualize improvement in reading and writing. We also invited Sandra Horn, Linda Sue Park, Diane Stanley, Benjamin Zephaniah and Anne Sibley O’Brian. In April 2009 we are expecting a special visit from Korky Paul, a well-known illustrator from the UK. Winnie the Witch, the award-winning children's book about a witch and her black cat, Wilbur is one of his well known books.
Book Week Festival
Each year the library holds a special celebration for Children’s Book Festival. The activities include Breakfast in the Library, Bookmark Competition, Library Skill Bowl and the Book Quiz. We also recognize the best library users from each class. We would like to encourage the children of the British School to take a greater interest in stories from other cultures by inviting VIP readers to tell a folktale from their own culture during the week. Through these exciting events we hope to bringing books to life and encouraging a love of reading to all our students!
